The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Legacy Management (DOE LM), is preparing the Uranium Leasing Program PEIS. DOE LM is being assisted by Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) in the preparation of the PEIS. This Web site is hosted by Argonne for DOE.
About DOE LM
The Office of Legacy Management was formally established as a separate element in DOE on December 15, 2003. The main responsibility of this Office is to ensure that DOE's responsibilities following cleanup of sites contaminated with radioactive and chemical contaminants are met. DOE LM is also responsible for providing support for DOE programs for long-term surveillance and maintenance, records management, work force restructuring and benefits continuity, property management, land use planning, and community assistance.
In addition to these responsibilities, DOE LM also has responsibility for management of the DOE ULP and continues to administer 31 lease tracts. All of these tracts are located in Colorado. Administrative duties include the ongoing monitoring and oversight of leaseholders' activities and the annual inspection of these lease tracts to identify and correct safety hazards or other environmental compliance issues.
The PEIS is being prepared by the LM Office of Site Operations (LM-20).
Argonne National Laboratory is one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest research centers. It is also the nation's first national laboratory, chartered in 1946.
The Environmental Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory conducts applied research, assessment, and technology development in such areas as risk and waste management, natural resources, integrated assessments, restoration, pollution prevention, environmental policy analysis and planning, and environmental management.
